As I continue my trials of beauty boxes, my Birchbox June box arrived and it is already July! (insert irritated face) I had been on the fence for a long time ordering Birchbox, after reading plenty of mixed reviews. I felt is was finally time to decide for myself. So, I jumped in on a special deal for a bonus box with a monthly subscription which made me excited to be able to review two boxes.
My first thought when opening the package was how small the boxes actually were and oh my, the samples are tiny! I doubt after completing my profile on the website after signing up, it mattered to the selection of products I received. Nothing I received would really be to my “match” or color choices.
The June box consisted of 6 products:
- Amika: (33ml) Perk Up Dry Shampoo
- Arrow: (full size) Boost Color Enhancing Lip Balm in Berry Busy
- Beauty Protector: (30ml) Protect and Detangle
- Keihl’s: (7ml) Ultra Facial Cream
- Marcelle: (4.5ml) Xtension Plus Curl Mascara
- Murad: (5ml) Retinol Youth Renewal Serum
This box was ok…at least it contained my favorite dry shampoo. I was not thrilled that I received two hair products and the Arrow lip balm was broken.
After some research I found out my free box was from Feb 2018…YIKES! Maybe I should not have been surprised, but that is almost a year and a half old! Along with a not so nice addition of bits of black foam stuck on the products, it was apparent that this box had been sitting for quite some time and that this was a pointless free deal.
This box consisted of 5 products:
- Avène: (5ml) Hydrance Intense Rehydration Serum
- Coola: (5ml) Mineral Face w/ 30 SPF
- Daily Concepts: (travel size) Facial Micro Scrubber
- Doucce: (mini) Luscious Lip Stain in Steaming Red
- Number 4: (30ml) Super Comb and Protect
Ugh! This was such a let down. I was shocked that the Coola sunscreen had not gone out of date. The Doucce Lip Stain (do not let the picture fool you) was a brownish terracotta color, surely the pigment has changed due to storage and the spray pump does not work on the Number 4 hair product. To be honest the only thing I enjoyed about this box was the little alligator logo on the Number 4 bottle. I truly feel bad for anyone who paid for this box during the time it came out, and I certainly did not need this as a free gift.
Overall, Birchbox is not my cup of tea, after a not-so-great first impression. Plus the choices of curated upcoming July boxes did not look promising either. I prefer to pay more and receive deluxe samples that allows me to try a product out for a longer period of time and not see the same old repeated brands. I think at the older price point of $10 was ummm…ok-ish, but $15 for a flimsy pull out box and tassel attached with a baby sized extra product…I’ll pass. However for those who do not mind lots of 5ml sample sizes, this box would be ok for you, but in my opinion, your paying too much!
I would love to hear your opinions on your personal experiences with Birchbox!
